The Indiana Poison Center is reminding residents that winter is the peak season for carbon monoxide (CO) poisonings, largely due to the increased use of fuel-burning devices and winter weather conditions.
Officials warn that snow drifts and heavy snowfall can block vehicle and appliance exhaust systems, allowing dangerous carbon monoxide gas to build up. Residents are urged to use caution when warming vehicles and to ensure exhaust pipes are completely clear of snow when shoveling out cars.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can cause serious illness or death if inhaled in high amounts. Symptoms of CO poisoning may include headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and fatigue. If exposure is suspected, individuals should move to fresh air immediately and seek medical help.
For more information on carbon monoxide safety and prevention, visit the Indiana Poison Center’s online resources. In the event of a poisoning emergency or for questions about possible exposure, residents can call the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222, available 24 hours a day.
Officials encourage Hoosiers to take preventive steps this winter, including using CO detectors in homes, maintaining fuel-burning appliances, and staying alert to winter hazards that can increase the risk of poisoning.
