Thomas James Hall

Goodwin Funeral Home

Tom Hall lived a full and steady life, defined by his love for family and the simple things that brought him joy. He was born on January 31, 1931, in Indianapolis to Robert E. and Martha (Lucas) Hall and was raised in Frankfort, Indiana.

After graduating from Frankfort High School, Tom attended Purdue University, where he studied economics and made the most of his time on campus — playing football and tennis, serving as president of the P.E. Men’s Club, and forming lifelong friendships as a member of Sigma Chi. He later earned his MBA from Northwestern University in 1959. In between, Tom served his country in the United States Army as part of the Counter-Intelligence Corps.

After the Army, Tom began his career in Chicago at Northern Trust, but more importantly, that’s where he met Gretchen Ahrens— the love of his life. They married on April 19, 1958 in Winnetka, IL and built a life together based on family, loyalty, and all the memories they shared.

In 1960, Tom moved his family to Indianapolis and began a long and meaningful career at Indiana National Bank. Over nearly three decades, he built strong relationships and earned the respect of colleagues and clients, eventually retiring as First Vice President of Corporate Banking in 1987.

Outside of work, he played golf and tennis regularly, spent time fishing, and belonged to Woodstock and Meridian Hills — places where he built friendships that lasted a lifetime. He loved to travel, follow sports, and show up for his family — whether that meant watching a game, fishing, or just spending time together. More than anything, Tom was known for his calm presence, for creating a peaceful and supportive home, and for always doing things the right way.

Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Robert E. Hall Jr., in 2016.

He is survived by his wife, Gretchen; his children, Tom Jr. (Della), Cynthia (Martin Aubrey), and John (Betsy); and his grandchildren, Aaron (Valeria), Mary, Andrew, Bryan (Jordan), Kevin (Gloria), Colton, Collyn, and Griffin. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Bodi and Carson. They all will carry on his values and hold onto the great memories they shared.

We sincerely thank all the fantastic Marquette Manor staff for making Tom’s final days comfortable and enjoyable.

Private family services will be held with entombment to follow at Green Lawn Mausoleum.  Goodwin Funeral Home, 200 S.
