IDOH & Leah’s Pantry Hosts Trauma-Informed Nutrition Security Training; Live Sessions Begin March 3

The Indiana Department of Health has announced its Trauma-Informed Nutrition, TINS, Security training that opened in February with virtual training sessions beginning March 3.

The TINS training is intended to introduce participants to a trauma-informed approach to nutrition security, allowing participants to explore the meaning of food in their lives and the potential impacts of adversity on the relationship between individuals, communities and their access to and relationship with food.

The training will also outline trauma-informed strategies for creating person and community-centered programs and interventions. The training is held in partnership between the Indiana Department of Health and Leah’s Pantry.

The objectives of the training include:

  • Recognize that positive and adverse experiences shape our relationship to food, our bodies and
    ourselves.
  • Explain the connection between toxic stress, chronic disease, and food.
  • Define and describe the basic process and principles of a trauma-informed approach and identify
how these principles may be applied to their work.
  • Describe ways to build a safe and trustworthy environment to discuss food, nutrition, and health.
  • Discuss ways to reframe and respond to challenging behaviors in a trauma-informed way.

The training structure will be around three hours total of self-paced work, including background information, foundational concepts and context for the live sessions through videos, readings and activities through TalentLMS.

Beginning Monday, March 3, the training will switch to virtual sessions for around 4.5 hours total. The virtual trainings intend to expand on the content that was explored in the self-paced work through discussions and activities. The sessions will be recorded and uploaded in TalentLMS for participants who cannot attend the live meetings. The sessions will be held from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Monday, March 3, Monday, March 17 and Monday, March 31.

A certificate of completion for the course will be issued once the self-paced content is complete and participants have either attended all the live sessions or watched the recordings.

Registration for the training may be conducted by scanning the QR code on the flyer.
