The Eastern Comets defeated the Carroll Cougars 21-6 in Friday night’s Hoosierland TV football Game of the Week.
“I thought we competed really well,” Carroll head coach Blake Betzner said.
Eastern’s defense came out strong, holding the Cougars to one first down on their first three possessions.
Comet quarterback Gibson Eagle led Eastern down the field on their first possession, finishing it off with a short rushing score.
After a Carroll punt, Eastern drove down the field, but a fourth-down sack by Jon Carey ended the drive, and the Comets turned it over on downs.
Carroll’s offense couldn’t do much with the ball and was forced to punt it back to Eastern.
A few plays later, Bentley Hullinger found the end zone on a short end around, pushing the Comet lead to 14-0.
On the next possession, Carroll quarterback Reid Hayden was intercepted by Eagle, but the Comets couldn’t capitalize, and the score remained 14-0 as the teams went to the break.
Out of halftime, the Carroll defense had renewed energy and forced a quick punt. The Cougars then put together a sustained drive, and Hayden found receiver Carter Altic for a seven-yard touchdown.
Eastern responded early in the fourth with a long drive that ended in Eagle’s second touchdown run.
Eagle finished 7-of-10 passing for 170 yards, added 82 yards and two touchdowns on the ground and 10 tackles and an interception on defense. He was named the First Bank Midwest Player of the Game.
The Cougars had two more possessions, but couldn’t convert and fell 21-6.
Eastern improved to 5-0 with the win, while Carroll dropped to 3-2.
