The Indianapolis Zoo marked a major milestone on Friday, Feb. 20, celebrating the first birthday of Sumatran orangutan Edi at the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center.

Zoo keepers organized a festive party for the young orangutan, complete with colorful decorations, enrichment activities and a special birthday treat. Visitors joined in the celebration by signing a large birthday card for Edi, adding a personal touch to the occasion.

Born to mother Sirih and father Basan, Edi has spent much of his first year close to his mom but is increasingly showing signs of independence. According to zoo staff, he has grown more confident and curious in recent months, venturing farther from Sirih to explore his habitat and interact with his older sister, Mila.

Edi’s name was selected by zoo guests through a public naming contest following his birth, making the community part of his story from the very beginning.

As a Sumatran orangutan — a critically endangered species — Edi’s birth represents an important contribution to conservation efforts. The Indianapolis Zoo’s orangutan center is internationally recognized for its innovative design, which encourages natural behaviors and social interaction among the apes.

Edi is one of the featured animals in the Zoo Babies program, proudly presented by Primrose Schools, which highlights new arrivals and conservation success stories at the zoo.

Guests can visit Edi and his family daily at the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center.
