When has the Frankfort Square ever looked so good?
WILO has been a part of the Clinton County Community since 1953 and Kaspar Media has been here since 1959. Our memory does not recall the Frankfort Square ever looking so good. Has it been busier and more of a hub in past years? Yes. Before the days of strip malls, Amazon, big box stores and easy “expressway” transportation to Lafayette, Indy and Kokomo, the Frankfort Square was THE county hub of commerce for miles around.
But we can take notice and take pride in the way Downtown Frankfort looks. So many property owners, City and County Government and businesses up and down each street did their part in making the appearance of our Frankfort Downtown area rival any downtown in the state when it comes to an aesthetically pleasing downtown. Is there more work to do? Sure. The Old Police Station needs a new purpose. We see other buildings here and there that can improve. But overall, the nine block area in downtown Frankfort is “on a roll.”
When Frankfort Main Street got its start in the early 80’s, one of the first things the board of directors did is take dozens and dozens of pictures of what our square and downtown 9 block area looked like, cracked glass, broken sidewalks, boarded windows and all. This author remembers the contrast of that appearance with where we are today.
“The Total is the Sum of the Parts” and what we have created in the downtown city-center is no doubt a vast improvement over Downtown Frankfort of the past. If we can all remember to “Shop Local” this Christmas Season and reward the tremendous investment our downtown businesses have made, we can all continue to enjoy the hub of our county for many years to come.
