At 7:47 a.m. Monday, Indiana State Police Dispatchers received a 911 call about a crash on I-70 near the 77 mile marker. According to the caller, an eastbound vehicle had lost a wheel, the wheel crossed into westbound traffic and struck another vehicle causing that vehicle to go off the road into the ditch. When troopers arrived they located a severely damaged vehicle on its side in a residential area near Corrill Street and Wyoming Street, which is on the north side of I-70. Troopers requested medical personnel to the scene for an unresponsive adult female. Paramedics arrived and attempted emergency medical aid, the woman was later pronounced deceased at the scene. Troopers located the driver and pick-up truck on the eastbound side who had lost the wheel.
Preliminary investigation was conducted at the scene by Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionists Trooper Ty Mays and Lt. Tyler Utterback. The driver’s side rear wheel broke off a Nissan pick-up truck while traveling on I-70 eastbound. That wheel bounced over the median wall and into the westbound lanes. The wheel then struck the upper windshield / roof area of a westbound vehicle causing the roof and windshield to collapse. That vehicle then ran off the road to the right, into a steep ditch, then through a fence and came to rest on its side approximately 25 feet from a house.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene to assist with the investigation and recover the remains of the deceased. This is still an active investigation and there is no further information to release at this time.
The family of the deceased has been notified.
