Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest

A traffic stop on S. Broadway Ave. in Peru resulted in the arrest of a Peru, IN man after troopers discovered drugs.

At approximately 11:03 p.m, Wednesday, Trooper Kegan Kern conducted a traffic stop on a blue Hyundai due to the license plate on the vehicle being expired since 2022.

While speaking with the driver, Jeffrey Azbell, 57, of Peru, Trooper Kern noticed indicators that criminal activity might be afoot and requested assistance. ISP K9 Trooper Andrew Baldwin and his K9 partner Mack, arrived on scene. Trooper Baldwin utilized his K9 to conduct an open-air sniff, which indicated to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle discovered suspected methamphetamine, suspected narcotic drugs, and suspected legend drugs. Azbell was arrested and taken to the Miami County Jail.
