Steven (Steve) A. Smith age 73 peacefully passed away at IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette IN surrounded by his family on February 18, 2026. He was born November 12, 1952 to Richard and Betty (Crider) Smith. He was a 1972 graduate of Frankfort High School. Steve was also a member of the Moose Lodge.
Steve spent many many years as a truck driver, traveling across the United States. Driving for Indianapolis fruit and lastly summit trucking. It was a true joy to him. He loved hopping in his rig and taking off on a new route. He eventually retired, but if you asked him, he didn’t retire, he was a professional papaw.
If you were to ask him what meant the most to him, his answer would always be his son, granddaughters and great grandkids. He was a professional spoiler. A word you would never hear him say to his grandkids, “No”.
Steve enjoyed baking, golf, tinkering in the garage, his motorcycle, working on vehicles, and playing Euchre at the Moose. He was a die-hard Chicago Bears and IU fan. Always a busy body you might have found Steve reorganizing the garage or repainting his motorcycle for the 6th time or probably getting into trouble with his great grandkids.
Steve is survived by his son Steve Smith of Frankfort, granddaughters Caitlyn (Bryan) Abbott of Frankfort, Hailey Smith of Frankfort, great-grandchildren Rylan Kanatzer, Raelynn Owens, Railyn Abbott and Brently Abbott all of Frankfort, Sister Cheryl Smith of Mulberry, Niece Tana Rhine-Austin and his beloved dog Axle.
Steve is proceeded in death by his parents Richard and Betty Smith, brother David Smith, former daughter-in-law Heather Coy-Arnold.
Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Saturday, February 21, 2026 at Goodwin Funeral Home, 200 S. Main St., Frankfort. Cremation will follow and burial will be in Bunnell Cemetery at a later date. Please visit goodwinfuneralhome.com to leave a condolence.
