Bud Wright, the all-time winningest coach in Indiana high school football, mailed in his resignation on Tuesday after 59 years at Sheridan.
Wright led Sheridan to nine state championship titles during his time with the Blackhawks and finished with a 463-216 record.
Wright said he was asked to either resign or be fired from his position as head coach.
The school administration said the resignation was agreed upon during the season.
The administration released the following statement regarding Wright’s resignation.
“During the 2024 season, Sheridan Community Schools worked with Coach Wright regarding his coaching future. After discussion and consultation with his family, Coach Wright agreed that this would be his final season.”
Wright was placed on administrative leave for one game during the season. He was reinstated and it was determined that two associate head coaches would be appointed for the remainder of the season.
Wright, who turns 84 next week, said he is not retiring, just resigning. Bud’s son Kevin Wright, one of the associate head coaches appointed during the season, accepted the head coaching job for Carmel.
Sheridan, who lost in the regional championship to South Putnam this year, will have a new coach at the helm for the first time in 60 years.
