Semistate Preview: Clinton Prairie Versus Triton

The Clinton Prairie boys basketball team will take the floor tomorrow at noon against Triton at Lafayette Jefferson’s Marion Crawley Center.

The Gophers won their first-ever regional championship when they defeated Lafayette Central Catholic last weekend in an exciting overtime victory 58-55.

Triton played at home and defeated Lakewood Park Christian 63-40. It was Triton’s seventh regional championship in school history and the first since 2013.

The Trojans were champions of the North Judson sectional, defeating Trinity Greenlawn 52-31 in the championship to advance. Triton ranks 11 in both the USA and Associated Press class 1A polls, and Clinton Prairie slots in at 3 in both polls.

On paper, the matchup looks like an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object. The Gophers are fourth in 1A in scoring, averaging 65.8 points per game. The Trojans, however, have the best defense in the state, giving up just 33.8 points per contest.

When they’re not stifling you on defense, Triton uses a balanced scoring attack to get the job done offensively. Juniors Gage Riffle and Julian Swanson, along with freshman Brady Wood all finished in double figures in the win over LPC.

The Gophers will lean on their experienced ball-handlers Jake McGraw and Alex Farley to hold off the pressure from Triton’s defense. Nick Curtin will also be key, using his size against a smaller frontcourt for the Trojans.

McGraw reached 2000 career points on his game-sealing free throws in Saturday’s contest, he joined the prestigious list of 2000 point scorers in Indiana high school basketball history.

The winner of this game will face the winner of Kouts vs Monroe Central in the championship game at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.
