The Rossville Speech Team, also known as the Stinger Speech Team, will host its annual Lip Sync Contest this Friday, February 13, immediately following the home boys varsity basketball game in the Rossville auditorium. Admission is just $5, and all proceeds directly support the team’s competitive season.
This lively, crowd-favorite event features creative performances by Rossville High School students who are judged on lip sync accuracy, choreography, technical elements, and audience reaction. Organized each year by members of the senior speech class, the Lip Sync Contest has become a cherished Rossville tradition that blends entertainment with purpose.
Last year, two Rossville students qualified for the prestigious National Speech & Debate Association National Tournament. Coach Jason Newhouser hopes to see that success continue.
“Last year, the national tournament was in Des Moines, which was within driving distance. This year, it’s in Richmond, Virginia, so the cost will be a little higher. Lip sync ticket sales help fund our program,” said coach Jason Newhouser.
Students look forward to the event as both performers and organizers.
“Our teacher gives us some class time to work on our acts. It’s honestly one thing I look forward to each year, and this year, as a senior, it will create memories that will last a lifetime,” said one senior participant.
“It’s a night of music and laughs. It’s pretty cheap entertainment, but it makes a big difference for us,” Newhouser added.
Community members are encouraged to stay after the game, bring friends, and enjoy an evening of fun while supporting Rossville’s talented speech students.
