Pursuit Over County Lines From Cass To Carroll Results In Single-Vehicle Fatal Crash; Investigation Continues

According to the Indiana State Police, a vehicle pursuit that resulted in a single-vehicle fatal crash across county lines from Cass County to Carroll County has been taken under investigation by the state officers.

The Indiana State Police announced Monday afternoon that following a request from Cass County Sheriff Ed Schroder, the state officers will begin investigating the single-vehicle fatal crash that crossed county lines.

A preliminary investigation by a trooper reportedly revealed that the morning of Monday, June 17 just after 6:30 a.m., a Cass County Deputy patrolling State Road 29 just south of Logansport attempted to stop a 2019 Jeep Compass for speeding. However, the Jeep reportedly failed to stop and fled southbound on State Road 29, leading the deputy into a pursuit southbound on State Road 29 from Cass County into Carroll County.

The deputy reported that just before reaching County Road 600 North, the Jeep veered off the east side of the road due to “unknown reasons” before striking a tree, rolling over and coming to a stop. First responders on the scene stated that lifesaving efforts were initiated, but the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash by the Carroll County Coroner. The name of the driver is currently being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin.

The Indiana State Police released that further investigative efforts revealed that the Jeep had been reported stolen from Monticello, and the Monticello Police Department is handling the investigation into the vehicle theft.

For more information, contact the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. The trooper was assisted by troopers from the Lafayette Post and Peru Post, members of the Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction Team, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Carroll County Coroner, Carroll County EMS and numerous fire personnel.

The investigation is continuing under the direction of the Indiana State Police, and no further information will be released at this time in regard to the case.
