The Lafayette Symphony Orchestra (LSO) announces that, after nearly 14 years with the organization, Executive Director Sara Mummey will be leaving her position in January 2025. Mummey has served the LSO with distinction since her arrival in February 2011 as Assistant Director & Operations Manager, ultimately being selected through a national search to assume the role of Executive Director in April 2012.
“After 14 incredible years with the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, it’s time for me to embark on a new chapter and to make space for fresh ideas and perspectives at the LSO. I am deeply grateful for the support of our musicians, staff, board, and community, who have made this journey so rewarding. It has been an honor to lead the LSO, and I look forward to seeing its continued success in the years to come.” Mummey says.
During her tenure, Mummey has made significant contributions that have transformed the LSO into a vibrant and financially healthy organization. Under her leadership, the LSO has experienced remarkable growth and innovation, including the creation of The B-Side Series, which launched in the 2014-15 season. This initiative has doubled in size since its inception, fostering new audiences and enriching the orchestra’s artistic diversity.
Mummey has been instrumental in increasing engagement among patrons under 40 through The Prelude Project, which successfully connected young professionals with the orchestra from 2013 to 2022. This initiative has now evolved into the “New Audiences” committee to focus on attracting attendees from all demographics.
Her strategic fiscal management has guided the LSO through past challenges and into an era of sustainability and positive financial health. Mummey has also built a strong social media presence for the orchestra, enhancing community engagement and outreach.
“Sara brought not only sound management, but also passion and creativity to her role as Executive Director. We are grateful for her leadership, which has helped the LSO grow in innovative programming and educational outreach, as well as exciting new performances,” said Stacey Mickelbart, president of the LSO’s Board of Directors.
In addition to her local efforts, Mummey has played a national role in advocating for orchestras, serving in a leadership capacity among peer orchestras as well as on the board of the League of American Orchestras. Her commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging has advanced the LSO’s mission and enriched its community presence.
Mummey has also been recognized for her leadership, receiving the prestigious John Corey Arts Leadership Award from The Arts Federation in 2015. Notably, she ensured the LSO remained financially healthy and all staff were fully employed during the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The LSO Board of Directors will initiate a national search for Mummey’s successor, ensuring a seamless transition as they continue to build upon the strong foundation she has established.
