Kokomo Police Release Statement Regarding ‘Unsubstantiated’ Threat At Kokomo High School

The Kokomo Police Department released information regarding a threat that resulted in the launch of safety protocols at Kokomo High School earlier today, and officers deemed the threat unsubstantiated.

Kokomo High School officials were reportedly made aware of a potential threat earlier today, Jan. 16, which prompted the officials to initiate planned safety protocols, contact local law enforcement and enact a lockdown. Local law enforcement was onsite, and out of an abundance of caution, officers searched the building and found no immediate threat in the building, authorities report.

After careful examination, the officers determined that the threat could not be substantiated, and the area was secured as safe as possible, officers report.

Kokomo High School remained on a soft lockdown for the remainder of the school day as a precautionary measure, which allowed students to continue their educational activities while visitor access to the building was restricted. Additionally, officers remained outside of the school during dismissal to ensure the safety of all students and staff.

After school activities will proceed as scheduled.

“This situation serves as a vital reminder of the importance of monitoring children’s activities on their devices and their interactions on social media,” the department released. “We encourage parents to engage in conversations with their children about responsible online behavior and the significance of reporting any concerning messages they may encounter. We urge families to discuss the seriousness of threats, as such actions are taken seriously and can result in disciplinary action and possible legal action. This is a community effort. Together, we can ensure a safe and supportive environment for all students.”

The case remains under investigation, and anyone having information regarding the investigation is asked to contact the Kokomo Police Department at 765-456-7017.  Community members can always report tips anonymously by downloading the “Kokomo PD” mobile app form the iOS or Google Play stores or text a tip by texting TIPKPD, then a space, and then the tip, and send it to 847411.
