The City of Frankfort announced the return of the Hometown Heroes program to honor local veterans at Veterans Park during Veterans Day week in November 2024.
The program allows for community members to purchase custom signs featuring their veteran’s name, military picture, branch of service and years served that will be displayed alongside other community veterans during the Veterans Day Program at Veterans Park on Monday, Nov. 11. Community Development and Engagement Director Kimberly Black commented that the program was a necessary return this year as the community appeared to enjoy the opportunities it brought to showcase the servicemen and servicewomen of the Clinton County community.
“We were overwhelmed by the positive response to the Hometown Heroes program over the last couple of years,” Black said. “Our goal is to continue adding signs each year, eventually filling Veterans Park with a sea of tributes to our local heroes.”
Frankfort Mayor Judy Sheets echoed Black’s statements, expressing how the veterans of the community sacrificed for the freedoms that every community member enjoys.
“Our veterans have made incredible sacrifices for our community and nation,” Sheets said. “The Hometown Heroes program is a small token of our immense gratitude. We encourage everyone to participate and show their support for our local heroes.”
Veterans or family members of veterans are encouraged to submit information for the signs by emailing Black at kblack@frankfort-in.gov or by delivering a Veteran Form to the Community Development Office inside Old Stoney at 301 E. Clinton St. in Frankfort. The deadline to ensure that a sign will be displayed by Veterans Day has been set for Wednesday, Oct. 30. Payment of $20 in cash or check form are due at the time of submission.
Veterans or families of veterans who participated in previous years may bring their signs back to Veterans Park beginning Friday, Nov. 8 for them to be displayed. Veterans or families of veterans who wish to keep the signs following the Veterans Day program may retrieve the sign following the program on Nov. 11.
