George Robert “Sam” Wilkerson, 71, of Rossville, passed away unexpectedly at his home Wednesday, May 1, 2024. He was born November 25, 1952, in Lafayette to Jim and Margie (Best) Wilkerson. He married Sue Wittenauer on June 10, 1972, and she survives.
Sam was a graduate from Rossville High School in 1971. He then went on to serve in the United States Air Force where he was part of the Military Police at the end of the Vietnam War. He worked for National Homes before working at Eli Lily for 41 years until his retirement in 2015. He served as a reserve for the Carroll County Sherriff Office where he received the Award of Valor and was President of the Reserves. He also served as a Volunteer Fire Fighter in Rossville. He loved the Lord and was a member of the Rossville Methodist Church and attended the Rossville Brethren Church. He was the president of the Homeowner’s Association for Lake Holiday Hideaway. Sam was an avid golfer and played on the Lily Golf League. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, working on cars, woodworking, and taking vacations with the family. He loved his family and enjoyed being part of his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.
Along with his wife of 52 years, Sam is survived by his children, Stacy (Troy) Felty and Shelly (Tim) Brand; a sister, Mary Wilkerson; grandchildren, Casey (Jaimie) Felty, Samantha (Griffin) Lowe, Hailey (Dewayne Shelton) Noether, Katie Noether, Aleks (Brad) Slocum, Krysti (Andrew Romero) Brand; and three great grandchildren.
Sam was preceded by his parents; stepmother, Lucille Wilkerson; siblings, Susie Panich, Dick Wilkerson, and Jim Wilkerson, and a grandson, Timmy Brand.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday, June 1, 2024, from 3 to 7pm at the family home, 4845 W. 775 S. Rossville. Day & Genda Funeral Home ~ Bodine Chapel is assisting with the celebration.
