FEMA Offers Tips for Hiring Contractors for Home Repairs

FEMA is reminding homeowners repairing or rebuilding disaster-damaged homes to take precautions when hiring a contractor.

Your home is a serious investment, and FEMA recommends taking several steps to protect that investment during the repair or rebuilding process.

Plan Your Project: Take time to clearly outline what you want done. Some projects may require a specially licensed contractor.

Get 2-3 Estimates: Review each contractor’s estimate in its entirety, including the cost of materials, payment schedule and timeline for completion. The lowest bottom-line cost is not the only factor to consider.

Verify the Contractor’s License and Insurance: Work only with contractors who are properly licensed, registered and insured. Insurance can help protect homeowners if an accident occurs on the property.

Avoid Large Upfront Payments: FEMA advises homeowners to be cautious of contractors who request large payments upfront to purchase materials.

Make the Final Payment When the Job is Complete: Before making the final payment, make sure the work has been completed and you are satisfied with the results.

During construction, if something does not seem right and the issue cannot be resolved with the contractor, homeowners can contact the FEMA Disaster Fraud Hotline at 866-223-0814.
