Edile Joan Cook
December 30, 1937 – March 15, 2026
Katy, Texas— Edile Joan Cook, 88, passed away quietly in her sleep on the evening of Sunday, March 15, 2026, at her senior living apartment in Katy, Texas. A woman of grace, leadership, and vibrant spirit, Edile lived a life defined by her 65-year marriage to her beloved husband, Tom, and a deep devotion to her community.
A Life of Grace and Professionalism
Born on December 30, 1937, to Laurence Albert Grafton and Theda Geraldine Boggs, Edile’s journey began with a touch of Hoosier glamour as an Indianapolis 500 Parade Princess. Her early career began at the historic Block’s Department Store in downtown Indianapolis as an elevator operator. Following her graduation from technical school, she enjoyed a successful, decades-long career as a keypunch and data entry operator for several large companies, where her precision and work ethic were unmatched.
A Heart for Community and Faith
For many years, Edile was a pillar of the community in Chatham, Illinois. As a committed member and multi-year President of the Chatham Newcomers Club, she took great pride in welcoming new residents to the area. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she remained a deeply active member of her local church in Chatham for many years.
The Rhythm of Her Life
Edile was a woman who truly understood the “swing” of life. A passionate music lover, she frequented Jazz festivals throughout the Midwest and traveled the seas on numerous Jazz-themed cruises. Her favorite group, The Four Freshmen, held a special place in her heart, and she delighted in attending their live performances whenever possible. When she wasn’t listening to music or playing in her weekly bridge club, Edile was the ultimate sports fan. A lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, she spent many spring seasons in Arizona collecting player autographs. She also famously cheered for the “Showtime” Lakers of the 1980s and was an accomplished bowler and softball player in her younger years.
Family and Legacy

Edile was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, Tom Cook, in January 2025. She was also preceded by her parents and her brothers, DeWayne and Harry Grafton.
Her legacy of kindness, music, and sporting spirit lives on through:
Her Son: Mark Cook and his wife, Lisa.
Her Grandson: Ceres Cook.
Her Siblings: Brother Gary Grafton (wife Lexi) and sister Ruth Hibbard (husband Ron).
Her Sister-in-law: Judi Fortman.
Her Nieces and Nephews: Bryce, Bruce, and her namesake, Edile.
A Gentle Farewell
Edile passed as she lived—with quiet dignity. While her family mourns her loss, they find comfort in knowing she is once again reunited with Tom, perhaps catching a Cubs game or listening to a favorite jazz standard from the best seats in the house. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2026 at Green Lawn Cemetery, Chapel of Peace Mausoleum. Goodwin Funeral Home, 200 S.
