With harvest season underway, drivers are being reminded to use extra caution when traveling on rural roads and highways where farm equipment may be present.
Tractors, combines and other agricultural equipment will be traveling between fields and farms throughout the region. The large vehicles often move at slower speeds and may take up more of the roadway than typical vehicles.
Drivers are encouraged to:
- Slow down and be patient when approaching farm equipment.
- Maintain a safe following distance and allow extra time for equipment to turn or enter and exit roadways.
- Avoid passing unless it is safe and legal. Farm equipment may make wide or unexpected turns, and operators may need to move across the road.
- Watch for slow-moving vehicle signs and be prepared to reduce speed.
- Stay alert and avoid distractions, including cell phone use, while driving.
- Use extra caution on hills, curves and narrow roads, where visibility may be limited.
Farm equipment may be wider than the lane and can require additional space to make turns. Drivers should be prepared for equipment to slow, stop or move toward the center or edge of the roadway.
Taking a few extra moments to slow down and give farm equipment plenty of room can help prevent crashes and keep both motorists and agricultural workers safe throughout the harvest season.
