Carroll County Fair to Welcome Back Traveling Carnival After Decades Away

FLORA — For the first time in roughly 25 to 30 years, a traveling carnival will set up on the Carroll County Fairgrounds this month, fair organizers confirmed on WILO, adding a marquee attraction to a 2026 fair lineup that also includes a live-broadcast swine show, six nights of local music and a full slate of community fundraiser dinners.

The Carroll County Fair runs July 11-18, with the carnival on-site for six days, July 11-16, according to Jessica Heater, who helps organize fair activities.  Community members disagree on exactly how long it has been since a carnival last came to the fair — estimates range from 25 to 30 years — but Heater said the return has generated significant excitement.

Carnival Return a Fair Highlight
“I honestly don’t know if you’ll be able to walk through the midway” once the carnival opens, Heater said, comparing potential crowds to last year’s fair, when food-vendor lines already stretched down Fourth Street. “I think it’s gonna be huge since it’s been so long.”

The carnival will occupy the parking area between Park Row and the merchants building, extending from the pony field to the pickleball courts and near Pavilion 4, Heater said.

Trucks are expected to arrive the Thursday before the fair opens.
Pre-sale, single-day ride bands are available for $25 — cheaper than gate prices — with 200 available through Heater directly. In a discount arranged by the carnival operator, 4-H members can purchase a full week-long bracelet for $75.

“The carnival actually offered that to me — I never even had to ask for it,” Heater said, adding that carnival staff wanted to support the county’s 4-H participants. Wednesday night will also feature a special discount promotion for the general public, though exact terms had not been finalized.

Swine Show Broadcast Returns
WILO radio and Hoosierland TV will again broadcast the fair’s swine show live, a tradition that drew large crowds last year. “We went back and looked at the numbers — I was blown away at how many people watched the swine show from Carroll County,” said Party Line host Sam Wort, who recalled having a hard time walking through the merchants building parking lot last year due to the volume of vehicles.

Nightly Entertainment and Fundraisers
The merchants building will be open nightly from 5 to 9 p.m., and a community dunk tank will run each evening, benefiting a different local group: the Sheriff’s Office (Saturday and Sunday), the Carroll Elementary Social Committee (Monday and Wednesday), the county volleyball team (Tuesday).

Live music is scheduled every night: Frank Smith (Saturday), Beauty and the Beats (Sunday), Hunter Wainscott (Monday), Common Ground featuring Nicole Carney (Tuesday), For Pete’s Sake (Wednesday), and Tennessee-based country artist Conway Turley closing out the fair Thursday night.

Community dinners round out the week: the Democratic Party serves chicken Monday, the Carroll County Community Club hosts its fish fry Tuesday starting at 4:30 p.m., and Republicans serve baked steak Wednesday. Organizers are seeking volunteers for the Tuesday fish fry.
