Boone County Sheriff’s Office Warns Of Scammers Impersonating Office Personnel

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning regarding phone scammers that are posing as the Boone County Sheriff’s Office, stating that multiple reports have been received regarding the scam.

According to the department, the scammers are telling community members that there is a criminal accusation against them, demanding money to make the charges “go away,” keeping them on the phone for extended periods and transferring them to fake “higher-ranking officials” and sending fake documents that look like court orders.

The department stated that the calls are a scam, and the department would never request payment over the phone for any reason, demand gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency, threaten people to stay on the line or face arrest or send court orders via text or email.

Community members may protect themselves by not answering unknown numbers, hanging up immediately if a scam is suspected, not sharing personal or financial information, verifying the caller’s claims by contacting the Sheriff’s Office and reporting suspicious calls to local law enforcement or the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
