Boone County Sheriff Warns of Phone Scam Targeting Bond Payments

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving callers falsely claiming to represent the sheriff’s office and requesting money to bond someone out of jail.

According to the sheriff’s office, the callers may request payment through credit cards, Venmo, Apple Pay or other electronic payment methods.

The sheriff’s office emphasized that it will not call and request bond payments over the phone through these methods.

Anyone who receives a call requesting money to bond out a friend or family member should not send money or provide financial information. Bond payments can be made directly at the jail.

Residents who receive suspicious calls are encouraged to hang up and contact the Boone County Sheriff’s Office using an official phone number to verify the information.

The sheriff’s office is asking residents to share the warning to help prevent others from falling victim to the scam.
