Argument Results In Shooting & Arrest Of West Lafayette Man Thursday Afternoon

An argument between two West Lafayette men known to each other resulted in a shooting and charge of aggravated battery yesterday afternoon.

On Thursday, Oct. 24, just before 3:30 p.m., the West Lafayette Police Department was reportedly dispatched on reports of a shooting that occurred in a parking lot near 140 Howard Ave. in West Lafayette.

As officers arrived on the scene, they reportedly immediately rendered aid to the victim who was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to the leg and head. Witnesses reported a description and last known direction for the subject.

Responding officers, including from the West Lafayette Police Department, Purdue University Police Department, Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department and Lafayette Police Department, reportedly converged on Waterfront Apartments at 320 Brown St. in West Lafayette as they believed the suspect may be heading to the complex.

A Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Deputy responding to the scene reportedly encountered the fleeing suspect leaving the area and detained him, and the weapon allegedly involved in the incident, a handgun, was recovered nearby.

The suspect was identified as Dontrae Alexander, 36, of West Lafayette, and he was preliminarily charged with aggravated battery, a level 3 felony. The shooting victim, identified as Leroy Rimschneider, 37, of West Lafayette, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries with expectations to be released soon.

According to reports, investigators believe an argument between the two men led to the shooting.

All persons are innocent until proven guilty.
