Rossville Elementary School third-grade students brought their learning to life on April 16 with an engaging field trip to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. The experience provided students with a unique opportunity to explore Indiana’s rich motorsports history through hands-on STEAM learning activities.
Often referred to as “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” the Indianapolis 500 has been a defining part of Indiana’s heritage since 1911. During their visit, students learned about the history of the race and its significant role in shaping Indiana’s culture and economy. The trip also allowed students to see firsthand how innovation and engineering have shaped the evolution of racing.
Inside the newly renovated museum, which now features approximately 80,000 square feet of exhibits, students explored an impressive collection of vintage race cars, trophies, photographs, and artifacts. Highlights included viewing historic trophies such as the Wheeler-Schebler Trophy and examining race cars up close, sparking curiosity about design, mechanics, and performance.
Students also engaged in a variety of hands-on STEAM exhibits that reinforced classroom learning. Through these interactive experiences, students gained a deeper understanding of how race cars are built, how engines function, and how problem-solving and innovation are essential components of motorsports.
A favorite experience among students was the racing simulators, where they had the opportunity to virtually drive on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway track. This interactive activity allowed students to apply what they had learned in a fun and memorable way.
“It was amazing to see how excited all of the students were to experience the new and improved museum,” said Miss Brantley. “When we arrived, there were cars out on the track practicing. The renovation truly offers something for every student to enjoy.”
In addition to the educational value of the trip, Rossville Elementary students were recognized for their exemplary behavior. Indianapolis Motor Speedway staff members complimented both students and staff multiple times for their politeness, respect, and engagement throughout the visit.
