The Howard County Board of Commissioners has declared a Local Disaster Emergency due to severe and prolonged dry weather affecting the county. The declaration, issued on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, comes after local fire departments reported an increase in brush fires and wildfires directly linked to the dry conditions.
As part of the emergency measures, the Board has implemented a countywide burn ban effective immediately and lasting until October 24, 2025. The ban prohibits the following activities:
Campfires and bonfires
Unpermitted controlled burns
Burning of yard, household, or construction debris
Burning of organic debris
Discarding smoking materials on the ground or outside a fireproof receptacle
Non-commercial open-air fires not contained in a properly attended barbecue grill
Fireworks, except for permitted displays by municipalities or approved entities
All citizens of Howard County are directed to comply with the burn ban and cooperate with public officials enforcing the measures. Violations of the ban are considered a Class B misdemeanor and may result in a minimum fine of $250 per offense, as directed by the Howard County Emergency Management Agency.
The declaration has been widely publicized and filed with the Howard County Clerk’s office to ensure public awareness.
Residents are urged to exercise caution, avoid all open burning, and report any violations or fire emergencies to local authorities immediately.
This proactive measure aims to reduce the risk of wildfires and protect lives and property during this period of extreme dryness.
