The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has released information regarding a scam circulating where a caller will claim that the recipient holds an
outstanding warrant and must provide personal information or payments to satisfy the warrant.
The Sheriff’s Office stated that a report has been filed by a community member where a call was received from a person claiming that the recipient had an outstanding warrant from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office stated that the caller has attempted the scam on a part-time dispatcher for the Sheriff’s Office claiming to be Sgt. Jackson Wilson, and the Sheriff’s Office stated that they do not have a record of a Sgt. Jackson Wilson being employed at the department.
“I’m sure they would have wanted payment by iTunes cards or something along that lines to get rid of the warrant,” Sheriff Tony Liggett wrote. “However, when the dispatcher said she worked for us, they hung up on her.”
The Sheriff’s Office continued to provide a means of avoiding the scam, such as contacting the Sheriff’s Office directly to report the scam or review the facts of their case or ignoring the call and blocking the number associated with scam.
“Always stay safe, never give your information on the phone and don’t go buying iTunes cards and give them that information,” Liggett wrote. “Your money will be gone.”
