Tommy McClelland Named Purdue’s Next Director of Athletics

Purdue University has announced that Tommy McClelland, currently the vice president and director of athletics at Rice University, will become the university’s next vice president and director of Intercollegiate Athletics.

According to Purdue News, McClelland will succeed Mike Bobinski, who previously announced his intention to step down at the end of the 2026 calendar year after leading Purdue Athletics since 2016.

McClelland will be formally introduced by the Purdue Board of Trustees and Purdue President Mitch Daniels during a press conference at 11 a.m. Eastern on Thursday, Aug. 6.

Purdue officials say the public is invited to watch the announcement live on the university’s YouTube channel.

McClelland has served as Rice University’s athletic director since 2023. During his career, he has also held athletic leadership positions at Louisiana Tech University and McNeese State University. He brings extensive experience in collegiate athletics, including strategic planning, fundraising, facilities development, and student-athlete success.

More information about McClelland’s vision for Purdue Athletics is expected during Thursday’s introductory press conference.
