Benton/Warren County, Indiana: At the request of the Benton County Sheriff, detectives from the Indiana State Police Lafayette Post are investigating a pursuit that concluded with an officer involved shooting.
A preliminary investigation indicates that on September 13, 2026, just after 6:30 p.m., Benton County deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2009 Infiniti G37 for a traffic violation on US 41 near County Road 400 South in Benton County. The Infiniti failed to stop and fled southbound on US 41 at a high rate of speed.
The pursuit continued southbound on US 41 before turning westbound onto State Road 26 and then southbound onto County Road 600 West. The vehicle continued southbound to County Road 650 North in Warren County. Just south of that intersection, the vehicle left the east side of the roadway and came to a stop in a field.
The driver fled from the vehicle on foot, traveling westbound into a field. During the encounter, the driver reportedly made indications that he was armed with a weapon. The deputy attempted to deploy his Taser, but the attempt was unsuccessful. The driver then disobeyed the deputy’s commands and advanced toward the deputy. At that time, the deputy fired his duty handgun, striking the driver.
Officers at the scene immediately began rendering medical aid to the driver until EMS arrived. The driver was subsequently flown to an Indianapolis area hospital for treatment.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation by detectives out of the Indiana State Police Lafayette Post. The information released at this time is preliminary and subject to change as the investigation continues. Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be submitted to the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
Detectives were assisted at the scene by troopers from the Indiana State Police Lafayette Post, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Fowler Police Department, Attica Police Department, Williamsport Police Department, Warren County Prosecutor’s Office, Warren County EMS, Boswell Fire Department, Williamsport Fire Department, and other first responders.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
