Howard R. McGill

Howard R. McGill, 89, of Flora, went home to be with his Heavenly Father August 3, 2023, at IU Arnett Hospital in Lafayette.  Born March 6, 1934, he was the son of Adrain Ray and Mary Elizabeth (Davisson) McGill.

Howard was a 1952 graduate of Rossville High School.  He married Ava Ann Catron on September 25, 1953, in Geetingsville, and they have lived in Flora for the past 56 years.

Howard formerly owned and operated the NAPA Store and was a member of the Flora Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and on the board of trustees.  He was very active in the Flora community serving on the Maple Lawn Cemetery Board, Flora Senior Citizens Apartment Board, as a member of the Community Club, and a former Volunteer Fire Department member.  He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and yard work, especially his flower gardens. He was servant-hearted, tender and kind. No task was beneath him for him to lovingly do for others. He always said “I love you” multiple times before hanging up the phone. He could never just say it once. His quiet strength in the presence of our family screamed volumes.

Surviving Howard are his wife, Ava; children, Craig (Kris) McGill of Monticello, Eric (Deb) McGill of Wyoming, MI, Brian (Teresa) McGill of Flora, Bret McGill of South Bend, and Julie (Steve) Harvey of Union, KY; grandchildren, Lesli, Aaron, Kinzie, Atalie, Quinn, Ben, Jessica, Nolan, Molly, and Mandy; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Carli McGill.

Following Howard’s wishes, a private family burial will be held at Maple Lawn Cemetery.  Day & Genda Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.  Memorials may be made in Howard’s name to Flora Presbyterian Church.  Messages of condolence to the family are welcomed at www.dayandgenda.com.
