Lafayette, IN The Indiana State Police Lafayette District is saddened to announce the passing of retired K 9 Colt, who passed away today, August 25, 2026, due to medical reasons.
K 9 Colt was born in June 2013 in the Czech Republic and was a German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois mix. Colt faithfully served the Indiana State Police alongside his handler, Trooper David Millburg. Together, they completed the 14 week Indiana State Police K 9 Academy and went on to serve the South Zone of the Lafayette District.
Colt was trained as a dual purpose K 9 specializing in tracking, suspect apprehension, and narcotics detection. Although assigned to the South Zone, Colt and Trooper Millburg worked throughout all eight counties of the Lafayette District, assisting troopers and local law enforcement agencies with a variety of calls and investigations.
Outside of his law enforcement duties, Colt was known for his friendly personality and his love of meeting people. He especially enjoyed visiting area schools and making new friends with students. When he was not working, Colt could often be found enjoying belly rubs, scratches behind the ears, or playing with his favorite large red Kong toy.
Colt retired from the Indiana State Police in 2020 after years of dedicated service. Following his retirement, Colt spent his remaining years at home with the Millburg family, where he was able to enjoy a well deserved life of comfort, companionship, and plenty of time with the family he had become a part of.
The Indiana State Police Lafayette District extends its heartfelt condolences to Trooper Millburg and his family and honors retired K 9 Colt for his years of dedicated service, loyalty, and the lasting impact he made on the Indiana State Police and the communities he served.
