Frankfort Water Works Looking for Volunteers to Collect Tap Water Samples

The Frankfort Water Works is seeking volunteer residents to assist us in collecting tap water samples for lead and copper testing.   This sampling effort is required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) under the Lead and Copper Rule, and is being accomplished through a collaboration between the Frankfort Water Works and their water customers.

We’re looking for residences that plumbing materials used during the construction of the house or service line may contain lead solder and copper pipes.  We are required to sample at least thirty residences during this sampling event.  The sampling and testing is done to insure that any lead or copper found in the drinking water is well within EPA required limits.

The sampling is easy.  Samples must be taken from either a kitchen sink cold water tap or a bathroom sink cold water tap.  It is preferred that the tap being used is not on a line coming from a water softener.  The sample must be taken after the water in the pipes has remained idle for at least six hours.  So, two good times to take the sample might be:

  1. Either early in the morning before using any water or
  2. The afternoon or evening when the residents have been gone for the day.

If you would be interested in assisting us with this important sampling please call us at the Water Works office at 654-5556 and give us your name and address.  We will then tell you when we will deliver the bottles to be filled and the instructions for filling.
